Oranges and Lemons...
We all went to the two relevant NaNoWriMo kick off events. The first was the East Bay kick off at the Mama Buzz cafe in Oakland. Everyone was really nice, especially to the girls, and we had a good time, met some people and hatched a plan to try to persuade Papillon in Lafayette to host writing sessions Saturdays in November at 2-5PM.
Then today we went to the Bay Area kickoff in some very nice person's apartment on the Mission in San Francisco and it was more of the same - nice people, friendly, etc.
So that all confirms that the NaNoWriMo crowd are very nice.
I also dug Grace a laptop out this evening, so that's everyone with writing technology.
On the way back I was thinking about 'dares' and decided to set myself one. One of my characters is going to speak exclusively in rhyme. He'll be known as 'Big' which is totally unclear but can be explained. Since Big talks in rhymes all the time and in East London parlance, rhyming slang is used to create names for things that aren't totally obvious if you aren't used to it, it becomes obvious that rhyme=rhyming slang=Big Bang=Big. And no - you can't pinch the name. But by all means. I dare you to have a character that speaks in rhyme. Actually I put the dare on the NaNoWriMo forum for dares.
I also came up with a good way to fill space without having to think too much. Since my main character is going to be a fan of Wimbledon, why not have him attend a lot of games and then describe the action in all those games? After all, this is more or less what Nick Hornby did in Fever Pitch and he became a famous novelist.
